Newly harvested grain can create new challenges when introduced into pig feed. In some herds, problems may occur with what is known as poisoning from fresh grain.
The condition is known in pig production, but is not yet fully understood. Typical symptoms in sows and slaughter pigs may include diarrhoea, reduced appetite and high fever. If the condition is suspected, the feed can be examined more closely, including through analysis of the peroxide value.
Vitamin E plays an important role
Vitamin E acts as a biological antioxidant and protects against oxidative damage caused by free radicals.
For this reason, additional vitamin E is often used when feeding newly harvested grain. The purpose is to support the pigs during the period when the feed changes and when extra attention may need to be paid to feed quality.
The specific requirement depends on the individual herd and the overall composition of the feed. The choice of product and dosage should therefore always be based on the current situation.
Two different vitamin E products
Jorenku offers two vitamin E products:
- Eurovit E100 with selenium – with synthetic vitamin E
- Eurovit E100 Natur with selenium – with natural vitamin E
Both products have been developed to supplement the feed with vitamin E and selenium, but differ in the type of vitamin E they contain.
